Reflections on 12/1/10
Got a wild hair and decided to run with it. I consider myself a 5 on a 10 scale for rope climbing. So here I go in my always in a hurry approach to something new. Jump right in and not think it through. The plan was how fast can I climb and add weight each round. Go,,,,,, up and down with no load. Check,, add 20lb vest,, up and down, check. Put another 20 vest on up up up blood presure on the rise, check. Strap on another 10 lbs, feeling like the ships whistle. Could not get up the rope so I climbed my cargo net, also 20 feet. Hell of a workout. Came back 5 hours later and put on 55 lbs and made the climb with ease. Going to revisit this again in a month and go for 70. Why do something like this you may ask yourself. Because I want to see what I'm capable of.

"because i want to see what i'm capable of"

this is what it's all about in my opinion. what are we truly capable of? how do we extract that day in and day out? and furthermore, should we every day?

your experimentation is inspirational and i believe it mirrors what i'm attempting with insular gym and my own training. that being said, your comments always remind me that there's more out there. more to overcome, more to look forward to, and more to achieve.

"met conned" is another attempt to put a twist on the standard model of 3 rounds for time. i'm not suggesting the above trickery to be better but for me it's a balance of what i like and what seems to work for me. knowing there's a 60 second break from the pain just around the corner encourages sprinting through each round as fast as possible, taking pacing completely out of the equation. this was primarily the case in my efforts but the fatigue from the 15 burpees and 15 pull ups proved to be enough to induce a longer than desired pause before trying to stay unbroken on the thrusters. other than 5,5 on the final attempt i went unbroken, but at what cost? did i rest too much before picking up the bar? i'm not sure, 75lbs would be an interesting comparison. in the end i know one thing, this combination and set up was highly successful in creating fear and panic of the next attempt. the desired symptoms of your typical metcon were all achieved; burning lungs, acid filled veins, and musculature ready to fail at any moment. there will be more experimentation with this type of scenario, there will also be some more standard approaches. in the end, as long as it's a goal, we need to do a little of everything that promotes increasing speed.
