Enjoyed this WOD. Breathing is key!
result: direct hit
primary attack combination: temperature, grip, toes to bar
confidence: temporarily lost
ego: destroyed
going second has it's advantages and disadvantes. when going first the intimidation of watching someone else go through what you're about to doesn't play a role. an open mind and feeling that anything is possible is standard. on the other hand, watching the other player perform the work first allows one to strategize based on what may (or may not) be the same sticking points. if one knows their opponent, and themself, well enough then typically it's to their advantage to watch and wait. alternating this "advantage" keeps things as even as possible but on this day typical results went out the window.
at 38 degrees one can only stay warmed up for so long before the body starts to slowly pull all reserves to the core. temperatures like this are normally not an issue when you come from the comfort and warmth of indoors, warm up, and go straight to work. waiting for 30+ minutes changes things. by the time i started the feeling in my fingertips was gone and it was impossible to warm up my hands but there was nothing i could do. it was time to work. the pain immediately following the release of the kb, pull up bar, and barbell was significant after the first round and became a real distraction. the standard elements of fatigue (breathlessness, waning strength, lack of energy) weren't present until the final round, and by that point it was too late anyhow. a combination that should have been to my advantage quickly became irrelevant with the lack of grip and numbness associated with the cold. feedback during the cleans and swings became nonexistent as i lost feeling all the way down to the palm of my hand. it's an interesting concept to tell your mind to grip when you don't know if it's happening or not.
part 2 was no better and brought on an unknown shortcoming in the inability to cycle the toes to bar with any resemblance of speed or fluidity. each round was broken into sets of 6/4/3, effectively killing my time and any chances of being competetive on this day.
luckily, i'll live to fight another...
